I love the Ultremo R as well. If I know that I will be on a clean course, free of surprise potholes, rocks, etc., I would definitely go with it. It's a supple, light, f-a-s-t tire. Problem is, I have to work, and the only time I can get to ride is during the commute.

I ride through Dallas, a city with roads that leave much to be desired. There are worse, but Dallas is bad. Every ride with an Ultremo R in such an environment will flat you. The Durano Plus is like the Ultremo's heavy duty brother. You still go fast with it, but it's built tougher. I don't want to say bullet proof yet. The Specialized Armadillo still gets toughest tire awards in my book until I have gone a couple of years straight with the Durano Plus. The Armadillo is a heavy hauler truck tire for skinny rims. There is so much heavy, soft rubber. Not like the racing-bred, taught and tough Durano. It's also not as good looking, in my opinion.

The Durano Plus is the best of both worlds. Did you see my report of riding into, and out of an empty traffic island at circa 17 mph at night? Bouncing over the curbing twice almost tossed me out onto the pavement. The 700c rim a-l-m-o-s-t tacoed, but the Durano held on, following the wacky warp of the trashed Velocity rim. No sign of damage to the tire. It was still inflated. I was truly flabbergasted.

This is an allegorical report. I am not an engineer, so I can't write like one, but you will get the gist of what the experience is like. To sum up: You have nice roads, stick with the Ultremo. You have to do battle with heavy traffic and war-torn roads, go Durano Plus. Aliens blasting you with energy weapons while you're battling traffic? Use the heavy artillery Armadillo.
