Looked at a Pocket today that I will probably buy for my son next week. I think the serial number was 158 (the numbers were really tiny and I couldn't
quite read the third one.) Any ideas from you knowledgeable folks about what year model this might be? The trike rode really well. I found no problems except
for a scrape on the bottom (which the owner showed me before I asked) because of it's low clearance with 16" wheels all around. It appears to be very
well maintained. Age isn't really an issue - I'm just curious. The owner said his girlfriend bought it for him in 2006, but he didn't know where or
from whom she bought it. Also, is it possible to put 20" wheels on one of these? I don't think I'd want anymore scrapes on the bottom of the
frame. :-)

If there is room for a 20" rear tire then it is 2005 & 1/2 and it is an improvement on clearance. Mine came with a 16 and I changed it the first week.
I think the derauler is an accident waiting to happen with the 16 rear.

I have Pocket #266, and it was made in late 2005. Mine came with 18" (355) wheels all around, but a 20" will fit on the back. And, while that does
raise the rear of the trike, it also lowers the front. I had to abandon my 20" rear, because the heels of my big feet were scraping the ground too often.
20's on the front would alter the steering geometry significantly, but might be do-able. On the other hand, you might run into problems and wish that you
just left it the way Paulo designed it.
I think the Pocket was introduced in 2005 - maybe a few were made in 2004. #158 would almost undoubtedly be a 2005. I think the very early ones were 16" all around, and then there were a few variations toward the end of the year, ending with a new frame design and 18" wheels all around. Not so sure that the 20" rear will fit on the earlier Pocket frame. I think it was a little smaller. |

My pocket is #167. I bought this pocket that was already ordered for their floor. Got it a week later. At the time most people were waiting months to get a
catrike. There was a price increase shortly after the pocket changes. However I got lucky and the price changes were not in place so I got mine for $1500. A
month or so later they went up 400 or 500 more. When I started riding my pocket I noticed how close the derauler was from the ground. In the extreme position
the derauler was about 3/8" clearance. I didn't like that. I called Paulo and he sent me a 20" rear replacement. The clearance is much better and
no problem steering. It is a possibility that at extrodinary speeds the steering might not work. I don't know. Paulo knew I lived in Florida (flat terrain)
and the probability of 35+ mph was not likly. I've had it up to 30 and it seemed stable.
I exagerated the problem of having the rear too high. After a hip surgery the doctor recomended the trike on a trainer. The trainer lifted the back wheel about 4 1/2" off the ground. That had my heels nipping the floor. I tried pointing my toes to lift my heels. Bad idea. Some of the muscles/tendons etc. were screaming at me YOU IDIOT. It hurt. A 4 x 4 under the front fixed the problem an leveled the trike enough to eliminate the problem. With the 20 in the back and the 16"s in the front I have no heel rub on the ground. At one of the Catrike rallys I mentioned to Paulo I was considering changing the front wheels to 20"s he did not object. By the way I still have the origanal 16 rear wheel, tire, gears, etc if anybody is interested. I would suggest a 20" rear wheel for your new/old pocket if it will fit. If it does you may have the very first 2005 and 1/2 If you have 168 instead of 158 I may have the firts 2005 and 1/2 lol Harvey |

Thanks for the replies! The Pocket will be home tonight and I can give it a closer look (a magnifying glass for that serial number is first on the list).
I'll also check the size of the wheels. The guy I'm buying it from doesn't really know much about the trike. I asked him if those were 16's and
he said yes, but could be mistaken. I now know the trike was built in 2005 (thanks, Chaim!) but will just have to wait in eager anticipation to learn more
tonight. Can't wait...
