I own a Cat Trail since July 1/09, I've just bought a Windwrap fairing, maybe 3 weeks now, and have already picked up minor nicks and scratches. DUE, Im
sure, to the unbelievable amount of glass and other debris on the highways and side roads in my area. So I've been thinking if a removable vinyl or ???
graphic were adhered to the front of the fairing easily removable (maybe 4 resale ?) Being Canadian, I thought of a single maple leaf, maybe stretched and
bulged out on the sides..............Got ahold of a rep 4 Fastsigns and want to work with them on design, talking to them next week. Any others with similar
experiance?

Several years ago I posted the source for sheets of static film normally used for protecting the top of motorcycle tanks. I have used
the same sheet on the front of my XT fairings with perfect results. I don't recall the name of this product, but it is superb, and you may find my post.
Alternatively, someone may know the name of the product. It requires only a bit of water to attach to fairing.
See this site for a comparison of the easily applied flexible cling film and a stiffer 3m product that uses adhesive and is not at all what I would want to apply to my fairing. http://www.webbikeworld.c.../tank-slapper.htm. You should be able to find a source online for 8.5 x 11 sheet of the film. I apply the film to the bottom of my fairing where it is likely to contactdamaging objects, and here I have little need to see through the fairing. I can easily see through the film, but I prefer a line of sight that is above the fairing. I also found the "NOVUS" 3-product cleaning/polishing system that works beautifully. I just removed some fairly deep scratches from my airing with the middle-abrasivity product. Regular use of the least abrasive product removes most blemishes, which would otherewise become more serious problems. This should get you started if you haven't already found these product. Please post what you find best eventually. I'd suggest being careful not to place opaque items anywhere you might need to have a line of sight, and to avoid anything that permanently attaches other than perhaps a small band of reflective tape.

Thankyou ffinklow,those cleaning products should do a good job, way better than colgate toothpaste as an abrasive. I still think a graphic for the fairing
would be best, keeping in mine sight line issues.

I also have been using Novus for some time. I am quite pleased with the results. Deep scratches require some elbow grease, though.

Rather than ordering cling film, I bought a roll at the local supermarket. I didn't realize this was sold like that. I'll come back here with a
report on quality after some applications where grease or abrasion is an issue. Lots cheaper to buy a roll for $12 (euros in my case) than to pay the same
amount for two letter-size sheets if quality is comparable.........The stuff was sold where they sell the shelf-lining paper.

The Novis line has been around for a long time, and has been used by motorcyclist for years to clean and take the scratches off thier windshields. It is
similar to polishing, or rubbing compound for paint, and has three different working compounds depending on how bad (deep) the scratches are. And yes Key, if
the scratches are deep, it will take a while to polish them out. But, IF they are deep, you can get a plexiglass kit that comes with some very fine sand paper
that you use first. That is what the military does with the windscreens (canopies) on the air craft. You start out with a certain grade of sandpaper, and
keep going finer as the scratch (scratches) go away, until you are at a point you can use the polish. Yep, it doesn take a while, but it is cheaper than
buying new, and sort of teaches you to be a little more careful.
Have patience, it's worth the effort. David |
