I'm especially interested because when this is complete I'll be able to get to the Van Fleet with only a brief exposure to a major highway. Watch this space for updates and pictures.

Van Fleet Trail - Auburndale Trail link under construction |
Lead | |
|
The approximately-1-mile "Darien Gap" (Google it) between the south terminus of the Van Fleet Trail and the northern end of the Auburndale Trail is
being improved with what looks like a continuation of the 12-foot-wide pavement of both trails. The rough grading appears to be complete, so roadbed and
paving can't be far behind. The result will be a 36-mile trail from the Auburndale sports complex (http://www.newschief.com/article/20090407/NEWS/904075044?Title=Auburndale-has-big-plans-for-Lake-Myrtle-Sports-Complex)
to The Middle of Nowhere (aka Mabel, FL). This link is currently heavily shaded, so will be a nice respite from the rest of the route, especially in the
afternoon.

Great news, Mikey! I thought there was talk of the rail companies taking the Van Fleet back. This will be one heck of a ride for the Catrike Rally next year.
Maybe at night. LOL

There was such talk, and pretty serious. The threat is over for now, thanks to the efforts of out state senator, Paula Dockery, who may run for Governor next
year (hint, hint!). I wouldn't be surprised to see the issue rise again, though I'm happy now.
It would be a wonderful night ride, if the Rally were scheduled during a full moon. For 2010, those days would be Jan 30, Feb 28, Mar 30 (hint, hint! again). |

A mile of shade | ||
This was taken from the north end of the Auburndale trail, looking north toward the Van Fleet trailhead in Polk city, a mile away. Hwy 33 is about 10 yards
to the right, and there are open fields to the left for about 1/2 mile, then residential neighborhoods until the parking lot at the trailhead. There seems to
be no reason to cut down all the foliage, but stranger things have happened.

Paving started yesterday, July 29th. Looking north from Daniels Way, Same as location above.

Looks like the paving is done, but there are those annoying cones at the ends. I'm trying to decide if they mean "no cars" or "no
traffic". I'll check it out later today. No work yet on the parking lot at the south end of the Van Fleet, but that's a State job and nobody seems
to know their schedule. Last I heard, the trail will go around the perimeter of the parking lot (on the west side) and link up the 2 segments. It's
possible but not comfortable to ride across the parking lot now.

Hi Mickey,
I spoke with "Ranger Mike" yesterday. The state put out for a 30 day bid the paving from the new north end of TECO to the existing Polk City start. It will go, as you said, North, under the bridge, and curve West, then north to the shelter, and east to connect. Polk City has plans for a skate park in the South West corner, just north of SR33. Mike thinks all the paving will be done this year. We can only HOPE... Will |

Mikey,
I slept with the equestrian group in Auburndale when I was on the board of trustees of the FBA years ago when we were building the coalition to purchase the land for the trails years ago. It is fun to see work realized.

Ah, THAT's what those cones are for. I'm afraid I've never been to auto miracle camp either, and it sounds like that's what you need. Did you
check the price of a used engine? If you can drive the thing to a dealer, it could be worth $4500, but it would probably be much more than $4500 to replace it
with a suitable vehicle. Dealers are falling all over themselves with deals, though. If I can be of any help with logistics, lemme know.
Will, I guess if it's going to be that long to finish everything, we may as well start using what's done. Look for me in the Crime Report section of The Ledger shortly. |

First ride on the Van Fleet Trail Extension | ||
|
Not a very imaginative name, but that's what the sign says. I started from home, rode to the Van Fleet Trail trailhead in Polk City, turned around and paid
attention coming back. Most of the cones are either gone or crushed.
Here's the map: 0.00 At the Van Fleet Trail 0 marker. Crossing the parking lot is not pleasant, but a good place to exercise your granny gear on flat ground. 0.14 Entering the Van Fleet Trail Extension. Great junkyard on the right, with what looks like a '53 Buick convertible rotting away among the other highway debris. 0.46 Nice little park bench and trashcan rest spot on the west side 0.74 Crosses Honey Bee Lane 0.94 Another park bench and trashcan on the east side of the trail 1.08 End of the Van Fleet Trail Extension at Daniels Way. Exit here for Chéz Mikey, continue southward to the Auburndale TECO Trail. Not sure if the stretch from here to the Auburndale TECO Trail has a name or not, but it's pretty bleak -- ain't going to be any high bidders for naming rights. It's a joy to ride -- very smooth except for the berries and nuts that pop as you roll over them. Heavily shaded on both sides for the most part, and those clever railroad engineers managed to hide the fact that there's a nice uphill grade (going south) shortly after the beginning. Lots of trash of all kinds on both side of the trail, left there by many years of casual hikers and, apparently, drinkers. Might be a fun day to organize a cleanup ride if somebody's got a trailer that would hold a couple of large trash bags. |

Can't wait to ride it someday. So does this add 6 miles to the Van Fleet trail? Shak, you want to ride this at night? We were coming from Mabel to our car
at Greenpond at dusk. Lots of things were coming to life on the sides/ditches of the trail! We rode fast to get back before dark and something went up the leg
of my baggy shorts. Grasshopper? Now I wear shorts that are either tight legged or have some elastic closure at the leg ends.

It's more like 7 miles, but by the time you get that far, one mile, more or less, won't matter.

Good news -- rough grading has been done to connect the extension to the Van Fleet, so pavement can't be far behind. Going north, you will make a
moderately hard left turn to go around behind the new skateboard-park area, then eventually connect to the south end of the Van Fleet. The bad news is that the
construction barriers prohibit getting off the extension at all for now (understandable, though). Watch this space.
