Riv-nut problem

Posts: 264 (07/11/08 18:32:11) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None On my Road, the frame water bottle cage is secured with Allen screws fastened into Riv-Nuts. I had thought they were braze-on sockets. Now the Riv-Nut has pulled out. They fit in the hole and don't move until I screw in the Allen screws a little way. Thus the water bottle cage cannot be secured. Is there anything I can do to re-insert the original Riv-Nut? Will I have to install larger Riv-Nuts and corresponding screws? I'd like to avoid that option if I could. Fortunately I have two water bottle cages attached to the lateral bars under the seat.

Posts: 578 (07/11/08 18:51:36) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Cadillac, I had the same problem, I solved this problem by purchasing Minoura Water Bottle Cage clamps and clamped them on the top seat support either side of the head rest. Look them up on the web they work well. The mounting flange rotates 90 degrees so you can put them anywhere. Steve Last Edited By: Hamachi 07/11/08 18:59:13. Edited 1 times.

You could also contact big cat and see if they are willing to exchange the clamp. It is a frame part and should be warranted.

I've had 24oz bottles on riv nuts without issue... my rack too is mounted using riv nuts. They may not have been crimped fully or the initial hole may have been to large and that will cause them to loosen up easily. But yes, there are a dozen or so alternatives including drilling out the riv nut and using a nut, bolt, and washer by removing the clamp and installing the cage. Your choice, Cadillac.

Posts: 371 (07/12/08 02:56:10) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	On my 2006 road I've had my Old Man Mountain rack mounted to the riv nuts--I'd modified the default OLM-Catrike mount scheme a little. Should the nuts take that? Or are they a bit frail?

Posts: 1497 (07/12/08 13:50:20) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Madams... they only get frail if they do break loose... meaning they begin to have play. The idea is that they clamp down tighter the tighter the screws are installed. But the hole in the original material must be drilled to the right size. We've only seen a few failures of the boom clamp riv-nuts so this should be an isolated failure. You should be fine. If you ever develop a rattle, take a look at the riv-nuts.

Posts: 36 (07/14/08 18:30:26) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I had the threads strip out on mine the day after I bought it. It was a pain, but I did manage to fit an actual nylock-nut in there and a bolt to it. Just my $.02 Bill
