Garmin Edge 305 shuts down |
Lead | |
|
Do you have an Edge that turns itself off when you hit a bump? It seems to be much worse on a trike because the bars are so closely connected to the axles. I
fixed mine and posted instructions in this thread: http://forums.motionbased...9b95c97faac&topic=6566.20
. The hardest part is getting the case open.

I just mentioned this in another post. My first 305 started shutting off on its own after about 15 months and 9-10,000 miles. Garmin replaced it with a
refurbished unit for $72 total (unit and shipping). The second unit lasted about two months before it started doing the same thing. Garmin replaced it with
another refurbished unit. That was about 4 months and 3,000 miles ago and is still working. However, like I said in the other post, this unit has been less
than stellar for performance. It has trouble locking on satellites and its accuracy, both distance and elevation, has been somewhat questionable. When this one
quits, I'll probably go to something else or try the fix that you referenced..

How about coming up with some kind of shock mount. Maybe there's too much jarring from the unsuspended trike.

I was riding over some really rough roads this weekend in Fayetteville, NC. I had my Garmin 305 turn off twice during the ride. I quickly turned it back on and
hit start again...and it recorded the complete ride with no problems (the gaps in recording were so short as to not mess things up in a very noticeable way)..
I have mine mounted where I can see it easily, so I'm not too worried about missing too much of a long ride. I've been on lots of trips with this thing
but this weekend is the only time this has happened. I'll be keeping an eagle eye on it from now on, though.

My experience exactly... I chose to poke it with a hot iron, though. |

Well, I rode 105 miles on this last Saturday and Garmin didn't turn off even once. I was beginning to be worried that riding on really rough roads had
somehow permanently damaged my unit. That would appear not to be the case, hopefully.

Some of my electronic gadgets don't provide very good connections in the battery compartment, but spinning the batteries by hand will bring back function.
I guess the springs or contact plates can stop passing electrons temporarily.

Unfortunately, you can't get to the battery in this device. They are rechargeable, but not easily replaceable.
Just out of curiousity, when you started having cut off problems, did you do a system reset? That tends to cure a lot of ailments with a 305. David

I read some place that the Garmin's internal connections to the battery were breaking due to the hard jarring you get when triking over really crappy
roads.
I haven not done a system reset, David, other than to reset the Garmin so that I can do another ride with the counters starting from zero. Is there any other kind of reset that can be done? The one I did involved holding down the reset button on the front of the unit. I'm guessing there must be an option buried down in the menus.

Yes RZ, doing a system reset requires holding down 4 buttons at the same time. Off hand I'm not sure what button you use, but if you can't find it,
I'll see what I can come up with. I think we had to get the information off the web site.
